PlayStation and Sucker Punch Productions’ original plans for the fourth Sly Cooper game have been uncovered, and they date all the way back to the early days of the semi-revived PlayStation Vita. The return of the wily raccoon and his crew of anthropomorphic thieves has remained on fans’ minds,?and Sly Cooper’s platformer legacy?continues to stand?Ratchet & Clank and the similarly dormant?Jak and Daxter as the holy trinity of colorful PlayStation-exclusive mascot platformers.?
However, the Sly Cooper series entered a period of relative inactivity since the release of 2005’s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, with developer Sucker Punch moving on to grittier titles like the Infamous games and PS4 swan song Ghost Of Tsushima. Although the Sanzaru Games-developed Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was met with a generally positive reception, there has yet to be another standalone Sly game, with only guest appearances in PlayStation Move Heroes and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

According to Kotaku and commented on by crossroadsts at the r/SlyCooper subreddit, a group of Sly Cooper fan modders have uncovered a pitch for what eventually became Sly Cooper:?Thieves In Time for the PlayStation Vita, dating back to sometime between 2008 and 2009. Included in this pitch is a 6-minute-long video presentation describing how the various touchscreen and motion sensor features of the Vita (then still referred to by its working title of “NGP”) would be a perfect fit for Sly Cooper’s stealth and hacking gameplay, as well as some concept art of Sly and several in-game locations.
Despite the?Sly Cooper franchise’s radio silence since Sly Cooper:?Thieves in Time in?2014, fans have been wondering what a?PS5?Sly Cooper game?would look like?would be like for some time. No such project has been announced or even hinted at by Sony, but hope remains that Sly’s surprise cameo appearance in this year’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and word of a Sly Cooper?animated series?(which has been in limbo since its announcement in 2017) are signs that Sony is planning something big for the fuzzy bandit and his band of lovable rogues. ?
While the pitch for?Sly Cooper 4 did eventually see?the light of day as?Thieves In Time, the process that went into presenting the project in its early days is still fascinating, especially given that the PlayStation Vita was its intended platform. Hopefully,?there may be more of Sly Cooper and the gang in a brand-new adventure on the PS5 someday.

He currently lives in York, Pennsylvania and works as a dishwasher at Shallow Brook Intermediate School. He is a big comic book, video game, and science fiction fan, and likes writing reviews on his blog during his off-hours, at least when he’s not writing articles for ScreenRant or scripts for some of his crazy TV show ideas.
A graduate from York County School of Technology, he’s self-published several books on Amazon, and once won 1st place at a regional computer fair for a CGI animated short. He might post it on Youtube someday. He hopes that working for this site will be his first step into the larger universe of online writing, since Megazord technology hasn’t been invented yet and he doesn’t seem to have any Force powers.
