MANILA — On Huawei’s AppGallery, the most downloaded apps during the last week of June in the Philippines are for banking, e-commerce and mobile wallets, mirroring the requirements of the new normal.
It also shows how the Chinese tech giant is taking on Apple’s AppStore and Google’s Play Store: going “glocal” or making the app marketplace both global and local.
Alongside TikTok, Viber, LINE and MS Office that are staples in rival platforms, the AppGallery has foodpanda, Lazada, Shopee, GCash, PayMaya, BDO, Metrobank and even SSS.
It’s been almost a year since Huawei first launched the Mate 30 series, its first without Google apps out of the box. Half a year later, for the P40 series, the company is positioning AppGallery as a worthy contender, rather than a handicap.
I spent nearly the entire quarantine cycling between the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ without installing Google Mobile Services (unlike on the Mate 30 series). There are ways to install GMS, but for this review, it was AppGallery all the way.
I’ve always been one to try new platforms just to be on the bleeding edge, even if it meant a clunky user experience. I tried the BlackBerry Z10 and the Nokia Lumia 1020. I switched back to an iPhone.
The Z10 had BlackBerry messaging but the battery was bad and the apps were lacking. Windows Mobile on the Lumia 1020 had enough apps for 2013, but they were slow compared to iOS and Android. The 41-megapixel camera with manual controls was fantastic, but the Instagram experience wasn’t.

AppGallery is basically a distribution platform for apps on Huawei phones that run the open source version of Android. The Mate 30 and P40 lines run Android 10, overlaid with EMUI.
Google Apps need GMS to run properly. Newer Huawei phones run HMS or Huawei Mobile Services in place of GMS. It’s like black coffee sweetened with either brown or white sugar. On the P40 Pro+, I used Gmail, Google Photos and Photos on the proprietary browser and added a shortcut on the homepage. Same thing for Netflix.
Other apps, I got from a third party store, APK Pure. Should an app be currently unavailable on AppGallery, the platform will direct the user to the official download link. This is true for Facebook.
AppGallery also has a wish list feature that allows the users to request for an app on the platform. Last year, Huawei offered developers $1 billion in incentives to build apps for the platform.

Notwithstanding its troubles with US President Donald Trump, Huawei shipped 49 million smartphones in the January to March period, just before the global virus lockdowns took hold, according to smartphone industry tracker IDC.
Huawei was the world’s second largest smartphone vendor in the first quarter behind Samsung and accounted for 17.8 percent of the market according to IDC.
It’s this scale that could encourage more developers to release apps directly on AppGallery and give Huawei users peace of mind.
Touchscreen BlackBerrys (the Storm excluded) with the iOS-like interface were late to the party. So was Windows Mobile. No matter how compelling the phones were, they lacked the numbers and faded into tech oblivion.
Two premium smartphone lines into its journey with AppGallery and HMS, Huawei is piling on features (5 cameras and 100x zoom on the P40 Pro+) and pricing aggressively (P50,990 for the P40 Pro, undercutting the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and iPhone 11).
Under quarantine with AppGallery, I transferred funds, shopped online, paid bills and kept a steady stream of cityscape and sunset shots for my Instagram feed like I would on my iPhone or GMS Android.
I still kept my iPhone though for my Notes App that syncs with my Mac (I track the household’s groceries and meals compulsively) and its remote control feature for Apple TV.
But if I had to go out of the house and grab just one smartphone, I always reached for the P40 Pro+, for the battery and the cameras. Sure it takes some adaptation on the software side, but such is true for things worth having.
