Lucky Japanese NieR Replicant fans are in for a treat, as Square Enix is set to open up NieR Replicant Cafes across Japan to celebrate the game’s release. The upcoming game is an update to the original 2010 Japan-only title, NieR Replicant, and is titled NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, with a scheduled release on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on April 23.
NieR Replicant is a result of the overwhelming success of Platinum Games’ critically-acclaimed 2017 title NieR: Automata, which was a sequel to the original 2010 game. The NieR series are spin-offs of Square Enix’s Drakengard franchise, which had a cult following but was not considered incredibly successful in the western market until NieR: Automata’s release.

As detailed on the official Square Enix site, and with the release of the game in just a few days, Square Enix will be rebranding its?cafes across Japan with a NieR Replicant theme. The cafe is scheduled to operate from April 24 until June 4, 2021, although the pop-up restaurant?is currently a Bravely Default 2 Cafe until the 23rd. Lucky fans visiting the Tokyo or Osaka cafe will be able to get a taste of specially-themed food and drinks (including an alcoholic beverage available only at the Tokyo cafe), as well as?be able to purchase exclusive NieR merchandise – such as shirts, pouches, stickers, and keyrings. Video game-themed cafes are incredibly popular in Japan, and while some only run for a limited time, popular franchises such as Pokémon and Final Fantasy XIV have permanent cafes for fans to enjoy.
Fans visiting the NieR Replicant cafe will be able to choose from six different dishes, and five different beverages, which will include a special souvenir coaster for every drink ordered, featuring 11 different designs. There is also an extra mystery drink and meal that is set to be revealed on April 24 and May 15, respectively. Some interesting menu items crafted for the cafe include Emil’s Bullet Hell Pancake; where berry flavoured pearls are nestled under in-game character Emil’s edible face on top of whipped cream; Let’s Have Pot-au-feu, Big Brother, which is based on a recipe from NieR Replicant’s Yonah, featuring an aqua colored sauce topped with a blue bow, and Devola and Popola’s Berry Coke, a layered drink in the colors of Devola and Popola, with bullet hell pearls in the center.
Even though the themed cafe will only be accessible to NieR fans in Japan, it is still exciting to see the amazing food and drinks that the game has inspired Square Enix to create. Of course, while going to the cafe may be out of reach for many fans, the abundance of shopping services available means that the exclusive NieR Replicant cafe merchandise may not be completely out of reach for more dedicated western fans. However, those that wish to try their hand at recreating Yonah’s aqua-colored pot-au-feu should absolutely go right ahead.
