The latest title developed FromSoftware,?Elden Ring, is confirmed to be the studio’s largest game to date and will include a free next-gen upgrade.

Two years after the initial reveal in 2019, FromSoftware released a gameplay trailer that displayed what Elden Ring?will entail for players. IGN was able to provide some further details regarding the game from publisher Bandai Namco, including a variety of features that will make it the largest FromSoftware game yet. A variety of new systems and mechanics have been included to?expand the dark fantasy world created by the developers of?Dark Souls and?George R.R. Martin.

The new trailer, released during Summer Games Fest 2021, highlights gameplay similar in style to the studio’s previous titles, including?Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, with a particular emphasis on dodging enemy attacks and?harsh punishments for failure. However, the game will reportedly include new features for the world itself, with a dynamic weather system introducing an element of randomness to the gameplay. While weather and time of day changing naturally is a common feature in games, FromSoftware’s previous titles have always bound them to in-game events or areas, representing the player’s progression. It was not announced whether this system would directly impact the gameplay of Elden Ring.

The trailer also includes a moment in which the player character summons an ethereal mount to traverse the land. This is similarly a new addition to FromSoftware’s features, which also lends credence to the reported size of the world. However, despite the apparent greater scope of the map, the gameplay will remain smooth and unbroken like in?Dark Souls. This means that entry into each new area and dungeon will be seamless, with the opportunity to open new shortcuts between zones.?While doing so, players will encounter a variety of landscapes, including foreboding castles, grassy plains and perilous swamps.

The world of?Elden Ring?will also be far from unpopulated, as it will host a plethora of non-playable characters that will interact with the player’s created character. Players will need to be vigilant around everyone they encounter, as some will possess “unique motivations for helping or hindering” their progress.

IGN also noted that players who buy the previous-gen (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) versions of Elden Ring will?have the option to upgrade to the current generation for free. The Xbox Series X|S will provide the service through the Smart Delivery system, while PlayStation 5 players can expect to download an update file.

Elden Ring is developed by FromSoftware and will be published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game launches on PC, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X on January 21, 2022.
